Suggested Power Play Unit for US at Heritage Cup

The full roster hit the internet today. Not really sure what the Heritage Cup is but here’s our extra man unit.

Chris O’Dougherty – Defense – Rutgers ‘09 – Vancouver (NLL)
Rob Pannell – Forward – Cornell ‘13
Brett Queener – Transition – Albany ’08
Paul Rabil – Forward – Johns Hopkins ’08 – Toronto (NLL)
Cody Radziewicz – Transition – Johns Hopkins ‘17
Joe Resetarits – Forward – Albany ‘12 – Rochester (NLL)

John Yozzo-Scaperrotta – Defense – Brown ‘16

412 Power Play (going with a left hand heavy group):

Connor Fields – Forward – Albany ’18 – Oakville (MSL)

Joe Resetarits – Forward – Albany ‘12 – Rochester (NLL)

Kieran McArdle – Forward – St. John’s ‘14 – Toronto (NLL)

Tom Schreiber – Forward – Princeton ’14 – Toronto (NLL)

Blaze Riorden – Forward – Albany ‘16 – Buffalo (NLL)

We’ve got an elite lefty passer in McCardle and an elite right passer in Schreiber, the current best American playing in either professional league. Using Riorden as a doorstep finisher and bigger body to set screens. Fields is our lefty pipe opposite Riorden, and although he doesn’t have NLL experience, playing in Oakville is much different than a few years in the MLL. Resetarits gives a more season box presence on the critical power play.

Maybe the coaching staff gets curious about trying a Pannell in the Riorden spot. Not sure how use someone with no box background on the power play despite how talented Pannell is outside.

EDIT: LFR told us Riorden is lefty. Pop Pannell in there now.

Penalty Kill for fun:

Matt Dunn – Defense – Maryland ‘16

Joel White – Transition – Syracuse ‘11 – Georgia (NLL)

Brett Manney – Defense – Delaware ’08 – New England (NLL)

Paul Rabil – Forward – Johns Hopkins ’08 – Toronto (NLL)

Hoping Rabil on the floor at the end of a kill could generate some quick strike offense.

Yes, Matt Dunn apparently has zero box playing experience but we want to develop a stay at home defenseman sooner than rather later. NXT stud Brett Manney isn’t getting any younger.

In all likelihood, Chris O’Dougherty or Donny Moss are getting the call before Dunn and even in Rabil. We’ll take Schreiber over Rabil in the late penalty kill scenarios but expect the coaching staff may want to save his energy.

A current D1 assistant told us, “Schreiber should never leave the field.” Fair enough.
