Peters Township OT Winning Goal for 2017 WPIAL Championship

Video evidence of a double overtime thriller.

After a 5-0 Peters run to open the game, Mt. Lebanon settled in and eventually battled back to a 6-5 deficit late in the second quarter. The game would remain tight through the second half with multiple ties.  Mt. Lebanon took their first lead of the game at 6:44 in the fourth quarter thanks to a goal from freshman John Sramac. Nothing would happen for a long period thanks to turnovers and Peters switching to zone defense). Peters middie Tanner Scott rang one off the post and seemingly won the race to the sideline, but the official awarded the ball to Lebo.

The every other year title pattern for the Blue Devils was coming to fruition until Peters regained possession and junior Will Delaney scored on the run to tie the game with 56 seconds to go.

The first overtime featured tired minds and bodies resulting in multiple turnovers by both sides.  Two moments did stand out. Lebo’s freshman goalie Tucker Welch made a sensational inside save off his helmet to keep the game knotted. The young keeper understandably struggled in the clearing game but didn’t seem rattled at all by the first quarter hole.

Peters defensive midfield of Aidan McCall, Aidan Stopperich (All WPIAL), and Nick Phelps (All American) held the fort, forced an additional overtime frame, and all in the stands were discussing the Penguins two overtime game from the night before.

Just like that Penguins win, the Peters Mt. Lebanon final came to a conclusion early in the additional period. Colton Abate found Danny Bacchiochi for the winner.

Congratulations to the players, coaches, and alumni. This is the first title for Peters.

Post Gazette recap of both AAA and AA games. Not as much excitement in the AA final, but congratulations is still in order for Mars who defended their title with another undefeated run through their classification.

Good luck to all teams headed to states.

Notes

  • If the WPIAL awarded a Conn Smythe, Nick Phelps would be the unanimous winner, he took every face off and then covered the opponent’s top midfielder
  • Peters won three one goal games in a row on their way to the WPIAL title, semifinals and finals went to overtime
  • Lebo freshman John Sramac scored four times
  • Mt. Lebanon plays Wilson
  • Peters plays Manheim
  • Shady Side plays State College
  • Still can’t understand why the 3rd place team gets the easiest first round playoff game
