2017 Pittsburgh Playoff Situation Makes Sense

More teams will get into the post season in 2017.

When realignment was announced, it raised many an eyebrow. While certain schools belong in the higher division based on school enrollment, nothing they’ve done on the lacrosse field would suggest they’ll be competitive with traditional large school powers Mt. Lebanon, North Allegheny, Peters Township, and Pine Richland.

The hidden wrinkle that everyone missed is that more schools will make the playoffs as a result the influx of AAA (read: D1)

Via WPIAL.org:

10. The top four (4) teams in each AAA section and the top six (6) in each AA section will enter the WPIAL tournament. Teams that qualify for the WPIAL Tournament may not play games after SATURDAY May 13, 2017 but may scrimmage any team still alive in the WPIAL Tournament. There is no limit to the number of post-season scrimmages provided that the opponent is still alive in the tournament. All playoff entries will be determined by section record only and will be determined by the best section won/lost record. Teams that tie for first place will not have the tie broken and ALL of the tied teams will be declared section champions, will receive section winner’s plaques, and will be entered into the WPIAL Tournament. All site assignments will be made by the WPIAL and Boys Lacrosse Committee based on site suitability and availability. Home sites MAY be used but no team is guaranteed a home game.

In the event of a multiple team (two or more teams) tie for a playoff position head to head competition will be the first determinant. If head-to-head does not break the tie, the following tie-breaking system will be used. If three or more teams are tied for third place and the tie breaking system identifies one team as the third place team, the remaining teams will then be tied for fourth place and the process begins all over with head-to-head competition being the first determinant for establishing the fourth place team. If a tie cannot be broken all tied teams will enter the playoffs.

Surely we don’t expect D2 teams forced to move up to D1 to be hyper competitive with current D1 teams right away. However, the chance to make the post season year to year gives programs like Canon Mac, Baldwin, Shaler, Penn Trafford a more concrete goal in May.

Current D1 teams that haven’t been in the post season on a regular basis (Bethel Park, Central Catholic, Seneca Valley) will have a slightly easier road to the post season which could jump start those programs again.

This is the silver lining in the forced alignment. It’s a small bit of silver, but it is silver nonetheless.
