Yinzer Report: Chatham University Adding D3 Lacrosse

In a continued effort to boost enrollment numbers, the former female only school announces the addition of lacrosse.

PITTSBURGH, Pa – DECEMBER 21, 2015 – The Chatham University Athletic Department would like to officially announce that they will be expanding in the 2016-2017 Academic Year by adding both Women’s and Men’s Lacrosse.

A search for new head coaches will begin immediately, and Chatham will play in the single-sport Ohio River Lacrosse Conferences (ORLC & ORWLC). These were formed in the fall of 2014 when the President’s Athletic Conference (PAC) and the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) aligned to create these conferences for men’s and women’s lacrosse.

Current PAC members Saint Vincent College, Thiel College, Washington & Jefferson College, and Westminster College sponsor men’s and women’s varsity lacrosse programs, with Bethany College sponsoring a men’s program and Waynesburg University and Thomas More College a women’s program. In addition, five HCAC member schools will compete in the ORLWC, while four HCAC member schools will compete in the ORLC.

“The addition of women’s and men’s lacrosse is an example of Chatham’s ongoing commitment to the expansion and support of our athletic program,” states Athletic Director Leonard Trevino. “We are excited to begin the process of building lacrosse programs that will compete at the highest levels, while continuing our traditions of academic excellence.”

The addition of women’s and men’s lacrosse increases the number of Chatham’s varsity sports to 15. Both Women’s and Men’s Lacrosse teams will officially begin play in the 2017-2018  academic year.

About Chatham Athletics
Chatham University in Pittsburgh, PA is a member of the Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) and offers eight Division III women’s sports and six men’s sports. The athletic program is housed on Chatham’s historic and beautiful Shadyside Campus in the $18 million, 74,000 square foot Athletic and Fitness Center (AFC). Chatham Cougar athletes excel on the field and in the classroom, as illustrated by recent accomplishments such as the women’s basketball team’s second-highest team GPA across all Division III athletic programs in 2014, and the swimming & diving squad’s GPA ranking in the top 50.

Women’s sports at Chatham include basketball, cross country, ice hockey, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, track & field, and volleyball. Chatham has added six new men’s sports in the 2015-2016 academic year: baseball, basketball, cross country, swimming & diving, track & field, and volleyball.

Yesterday, the head coaching position opened.

PITTSBURGH, PA – JANUARY 11th, 2016 — The Chatham University Athletic Department is accepting applications for the Head Men’s Lacrosse Coach. Qualified applicants must apply through https://www4.recruitingcenter.net/Clients/chatham/PublicJobs/controller.cfm

Could this mean that fellow Pittsburgh D3 school Carnegie Mellon, ranked 23rd in the nation by US. News, will add the sport next?

Unlike Chatham, CMU doesn’t need to add sports to put more bodies in their dorm rooms. Undergraduate enrollment is just over 6300.  Fall 2014 acceptance rate, according to US News, was 24.6%.

The more likely D3 schools in Western PA to add soon include Grove City and Allegheny. Could also keep an eye out for Waynesburg since they already have a women’s team.

Westminster, just north of the city, gets started this year. More on them later this week.

What a time for Yinzer Lax.
