The Lebo Pine game is a first time meeting.
There is a measure of familiarity in this game as Pine Richland head coach Chip Young is a Mt. Lebanon graduate. D1 commits to Yale, Mercer, VMI, and Robert Morris will be patrolling the offensive ends for both teams in what is likely to be a high scoring affair. Pine has the advantage at the face off X, but a distinct disadvantage between the pipes. If Pine’s sophomore goalie Alex Hein can get stay the course and post a 50% save percentage, Pine could secure the upset. If Hein is over 60% and they lose, the blame will fall elsewhere.
Pine does not want that game to go to overtime. They’re 0-3 in the extra frame this year.
Mt. Lebanon blew Fox Chapel out of the water in their quarterfinal match up. The known commodities are performing and they’re getting ample secondary scoring. How they approach Connor Slomka and face off X will be interesting. Except Mt. Lebanon to bump up a pole to Bryan Newcamp if Newcamp is in the midfield. He has been playing attack lately which really stacks the deck for Pine below GLE but weakens their midfield. Fortunately for Mt. Lebanon, they have Providence commit Nick Tommasi who will cover VMI commit Austin Hughes or Newcamp. Or, Mt. Lebanon could opt to use another large defenseman Preston Chamberlin on Hughes. Lots of moving pieces for this one. Should be the most entertaining of the two games.
North Allegheny edged out Shady Side 4-3 in mid April.
SSA offense has surged the last two games scoring 9 and 8 goals respectively. They could have had several more in their 8-6 playoff win over Upper St. Clair. If they manage to score 7+ goals they could be in a great spot. The Connor Jones (Shady Side/Defense/Connecticut College) Kyle Rullan (North Allegheny/Attack/Bellarmine) match up will be one to watch.
