Getting you dialed in for the MCLA’s end of year event.
Team: San Diego State
Seed: 10, at large bid
Projected Seed: 8
1st Round Opponent: Virginia Tech
Record Against Tournament Teams: 1-4, lost to Cal Poly, Arizona State, Grand Canyon (twice), defeated BYU
Odds of Winning: 70 to 1
Player to Watch: Freshmen attackman Kevin Leis registered 3 goals in SDSU’s 8-7 win over BYU. In their four losses, he scored 3 goals and dished out 3 helpers. Leis isn’t the primary option for the Aztecs, but if he can find a way to chip in 2 goals against Virginia Tech it’s going to take immense pressure off the top weapons.
San Diego State got the 2015 season off and rolling with a February 12th win over BYU. Four days later, they lost to Cal Poly. They would win their next twelve games to secure an at large birth. Losses to Arizona State and Grand Canyon at the end of the season prevented them from earning a higher bid, but the program is certainly moving in the right direction having qualified for the national tournament for the first time.
Four of the top eight leading scorers are freshmen. This could only be the beginning of an extended post season run for the Aztecs.
The dark side of youth is that group looking to the future. When things get hard against Virginia Tech’s defense, will the freshmen play with a sense of urgency or ease back believing they’ll have another shot next year? While four top scorers are expected to return in 2016, the Aztecs also graduate three of the top five scorers. The game against VT could represent the last chance the freshmen have to play with the seniors.
Hopefully the Aztecs have learned from their mistakes against Arizona State.
