Colorado’s OT Winner Against BYU

Various degrees of emotion.

Junior attackman John Clayton seals the RMLC automatic qualifier for the Buffs.

Was the goalie screened on the initial shot? That juicy rebound and freshman defender Boston Handley's miss on the ground ball led to the final marker.

  • BYU showed zone for the first time in forever, if not ever, against Westminster in the RMLC semifinal. The defensive strategy continued to the RMLC title game. Getting a zone defense reorganized in an unsettled situation is very trying.
  • A zone defense would be a smart move for any team to mix into the national tournament given the nature of the short prep time for opponents. Additionally, a passive zone defense would allow you to rest a bit while playing defense. More mentally taxing than physically demanding. Or, you can stay man in the early round games, blow teams out, and rest starters.
  • Clayton hadn’t scored a goal since April 9th against Westminster.
  • Not including the RMLC title game (those stats haven’t made it to the MCLA website yet), Clayton has 23 goals and 18 assists this spring. He had 11 points in his first two seasons at Boulder.

The Buffs¬†are likely a top 5 seed when tonight’s poll is released.

Projected MCLA tournament field as of Sunday morning.
