After a messy weekend in Arizona, a first stab at the D1 tournament field.
UCSB’s fall from grace and the UMLL losing an AQ for the second time in three years opens the door for a second team from SELC and Westminster.
1. Colorado (RMLC AQ) vs. 16. Texas (LSA AQ)
Texas is the defending LSA champ. They’ve been manhandled by ranked teams this spring. Their next three games are against Arizona, Grand Canyon, and Arizona State. They could enter the national tournament with a losing record.
2. Arizona State (SLC AQ) vs. 15. Indiana (GRLC AQ)
Indiana will finish with a better record than Texas and currently has a competitive loss on their schedule (Duluth 7-6).
3. CSU (At Large) vs. 14. Michigan State (CCLA (AQ)
Spartans got pummeled in Arizona this weekend. One talking head said their goalie is overrated and their offense is helpless.
4. Cal Poly (WCLL AQ) vs. 13. Oregon State (PNCLL AQ)
Chad Stelling has done a great job at OSU. Corvallis is not exactly near a western hotbed. Will be great to have relatively new blood in the tournament.
5. BYU (At Large) vs. 12. Georgia Tech (At Large)
This is the best team Georgia Tech has ever had. Possible top 5 seed up for grabs if they continue their undefeated run which will have to go through Boston College and Northeastern in Massachusetts in April. Not to mention Virginia Tech in the SELC tournament.
6. Grand Canyon (At Large) vs. 11. Boston College (PCLL AQ)
The most compelling first round game in this projection. Two institutions on opposite ends of the spectrum. Northeast prep school bros versus Canadians.
7. Chapman (At Large) vs. 10. Westminster (At Large)
Westminster gets a few games above .500 hundred against their terrifying schedule and they’ll earn an at large. Tournament committee will have a hard time putting an SELC at large team above an RMLC at large team even if that RMLC team has an unimpressive record.
8. Arizona (At Large) vs. 9. Virginia Tech (SELC AQ)
Like Georgia Tech’s schedule, Virginia Tech has a very real chance of going undefeated in the regular season assuming they get through a battered Michigan State squad in Blacksburg in April. SELC gets two teams in the tournament if both VT and GT have special regular seasons.
D2 bracketology will be released in another few weeks. Did you know Grand Valley State hasn’t even played a game yet?
